Attention Drivers

Effective April 1, 2011
Changes to the Motor Vehicle Act ban the use of hand-held electronic devices while driving.


What Does This Mean?

 

Prohibited

Drivers with a full-privilege licence are not allowed to use hand-held electronic devices having the capability of talking, texting or emailing, while driving.

Drivers in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program are not allowed to use the following while driving:

  • Any hand-held electronic devices with the capability of talking, texting or emailing, and
  • Any hands-free devices.

 

Permitted

Drivers with a full-privilege licence are allowed to use the following while driving:

  • Hand-held electronic devices, if these are configured and used in a hands-free manner, and
  • Amateur radio, CB radio, and other simple push-to-talk, two-way radios as long as they are not used in a telephone function, or are transmitting or receiving email or texts.

All drivers, including GDL Program drivers, may use electronic devices if vehicles are legally and safely parked and are not impeding traffic.

 

Penalities 

  • $250 summary conviction points
  • 3 demerit points
  • GDL Program drivers will also lose all the hours of driving experience earned and will have to restart the program.
